| Plenty Of Parks In Winsted
By Teresa Jagodzinski
The Winsted area is home to several parks, and each of these parks provides something a little different.
Hainlin Park, located at McLeod Avenue and McLeod County Road 1, offers many opportunities for active adults and children.
Two sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, playground equipment, sheltered picnic area, and restrooms are all features Hainlin Park has to offer.
Many recent upgrades have been done at this park including horseshoe pit and parking lot improvements, three new Buck-a-Bouts, and a skate park.
Located on the west side of Winsted Lake is Mill Reserve Park, often called the “lake park.”
A public swimming beach is part of this park along with a nice size fishing pier. However, there is not a lifeguard provided at this beach.
There have been recent beach improvements, three new Buck-a-Bouts, and a slider added to the park.
Mill Reserve Park visitors can make use of the picnic tables and shelter, play on playground equipment, or just enjoy the lake view.
At the south end of the lake on Kingsley Street South, lies South View Park.
This park offers playground equipment, a softball field, and open space to use for any activity.
The Luce Line Trail is adjacent to this park. This trail encompasses more than 60 miles of trail from the western Minneapolis suburbs to Cosmos.
Parks can also be found in the Northgate and Westgate housing developments. Westgate’s park includes a ballfield.
During the summer months, Barrett Field is the place to see ballplayers from t-ball on up. Located at the corner of First Street and Sherman Avenue, this softball field attracts fans of all ages.
Some playground equipment, picnic tables, a basketball hoop, and restrooms are also part of the park.
Weinbeck Field is located along Main Avenue and is home to the local football field, a track, and basketball courts.
The Denis M. Campbell Baseball Field is located just to the north of Weinbeck Field along McLeod County Road 1.
The field is named after one of Winsted’s amateur baseball Hall of Fame members.
A batting practice tunnel for the public was donated by several volunteer organizations to this field in 1988.
Southeast of town is William May County Park. It is one of six McLeod County parks and includes 71 acres of outdoor bliss.
The park boasts hiking trails, a picnic shelter, grills, a drinking water pump, and a new restroom facility all surrounded by trees.
Finally, the Oscar and Anna Johnson County Park is located just a few miles northeast of Winsted in Wright County. The park features a swimming beach on Dog Lake, a boat launch, picnic areas, and restrooms.
Winsted is named Tree City USA
The city of Winsted has been named a Tree City USA for 2006 by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
Winsted met the following four standards to qualify for this title: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance.
To celebrate this accomplishment, a tree was planted in Mill Reserve Park in 2006, and in 2007 a tree was planted in Northgate.
These trees have been planted to improve the quality of life in the Winsted area for the present citizens and for future generations.
